How to read skincare labels like a PRO and ingredients to avoid

Skincare products are becoming more complicated every day. New and advanced ingredients are becoming easily accessible with higher efficacy and so are their side effects. It is critical for consumers to be able to discern the good from the bad when the ingredients listed on the box read more like a biochemical engineering dissertation.

Potential skin irritants.
Scents, colorants, preservatives are commonly known skin irritants. It is recommended to take note of the comedogenic ingredients found commonly in sunscreen and other skin products as they may produce comedones (blackheads) or acne in adults who used them.

Comedogenic ingredients to look out for:
Acetylated Lanolin Alcohol, Ethylhexyl Palmitate, Sodium Laureth Sulfate, and Potassium Chloride.

Ingredients are listed in descending order with the highest content level in the product. But, let’s not be quick to judge if the size or amount is sufficient to bring out the said benefits. Certain active ingredients only need to present at minimal amount (about 0.5 to 1%) to be the most effective and consistent application goes a long way!

TIP: A general rule, less is always more when it comes to beauty products. Look out for products with shorter ingredients list because it will less likely make your skin freak or break out.

Expiration symbol

Decode your expiration date. It can be tempting to hold on to our beauty purchase for as long as possible but ultimately they do have expiration dates. Ignoring them may not be ideal since they may accumulate bacteria, gone bad and for sure no longer promise what it can achieved.

Have you seen this symbol on your products? It actually refers to how long the product is good for use after opening. (In this example, 12months)
