First Time Getting a Facial? Here’s what you need to know

As the new year approaches, you may start to consider getting a facial to get your skin holiday-ready. Before you book an appointment with a skincare esthetician, prepare a list:

What is your current skin care routine like?
What kind of skincare products are you currently using?
Do you have any skin allergies?
How familiar are you with facials?
What are your skin concerns?
What are your goals for your skin?

This list helps your esthetician evaluate your skin better and find facial treatments and skincare products best suited for your needs.

Why should I get one?

Depending on your skin type, different facial treatments will aim to work on specific skin concerns. In general, facials help smoothen your skin texture and give your skin the hydration it needs. Your skin will also look brighter, with fewer breakouts. Your skin will also feel suppler and firmer with regular treatments.

How often should I get one?

For normal skin types, going to your esthetician once a month is recommended. For dry, dehydrated skin, having facials that rehydrates the skin more regularly is recommended. For people with oily skin living in a hot and humid place like Singapore, it is very important to get facials as being outside with sunscreen on negatively affects oily skin. Having the right facial treatments will help ameliorate these skincare concerns.

What should I look out for?

While facials are supposed to be relaxing and good for you, there are some unpleasant moments during the process. One of the unpleasant part of a facial is the extraction. Extractions should only be done by a trained professional as they are able to properly and accurately extract the zit to clean your pores deeply. Good aestheticians will know if the zit is ready for extraction as premature extraction can lead to scarring. [At Caring Skin] In order to cool your skin right after an extraction, we use cold steam to cool the face down so as to not aggravate the skin further.

Near the end of a facial, your skin may stay red but it will go away within a day. Some people may even experience breakouts after their facial, but it should take a few more days to heal. Your skin should start improving with the facial treatments. If not, you may want to consider seeking the help of a dermatologist.

Look forward to our next blog post on maintaining the results of your facial treatments soon.
